RE: Wheel chocks - what kind is best?

I'm a roto fan - but it would be interesting to hear from
someone who has used both Bal & Rotos.
IMO - either would do better at limiting trailer "movement" than
the rubber chocks that CH likes.
By "movement" - I'm *NOT* referring to rolling - but the type of
movement that folks buy a front tripod to prevent.
BTW - if you try a search on chocks - there should be hours of reading.
It comes up a lot.
JC
I have owned both, and the one thing that stands out in my mind is that the BAL chocks do not provide a positive lock on the wheels. If your rig moves more than a few inches, the BAL's will pop out. Don't ask me how I know this :o. My experience is that the Roto's are more effective at reducing movement in the 5er as well.

RE: Steady Fast stablizers

I have the JT Strongarm stabilizers which are a similar product. They made a very noticeable difference in the movement within the 5er. If you are handy and perform most repairs yourself, you should be able to handle the installation. When I trade the bunks for recliners, I will buy another set and install them on the new 5er.

RE: Where to go during Christmas break?

I'll trade you then. I'm off from probably 12/19 til? Hopefully it will only be a month but can't really go anywhere. DW doesn't have enough vacation to really head in any direction and the bills don't stop coming in just cause I don't go to work.
Camping at OL the week after Christmas has become a tradition for my family. Come on down, a terrific vacation will most certainly ensue.

RE: Got the new Silverback 30LSA but I need help??

Your 5er has an advertised dry pin weight of almost 2k pounds. Cedar Creek's have huge basement storage area's that can hold lots of camping stuff. All that stuff adds weight to the pin. Now add a slider hitch, fuel, passengers, and more misc. camping treasures, and it becomes easy to see how the payload of a 3/4 ton truck can used up or exceeded.
I was in your position a couple of years ago. A 3/4 ton truck will certainly pull your 5er, no problem. The late model diesels tend to give a false impression of what is safe to tow because of the improvements that have been made in recent years with regards to hp and torque. I could have purchased a SRW 1 ton truck and still been within my weight ratings. After much thought and shopping, I decided to go with a DRW 1 ton truck.
One last thing, I weighed my rig fully loaded and the advertised dry pin weight was about 1800 pounds. The wet pin weight was over 2500 pounds. I sincerely hope that I have provided some useful real world information that you can utilize to aid in making an informed decision.

RE: Holiday Rambler Owners

Back a few years ago, HR was on my short list of possible 5ers to purchase. In the process of doing my homework I found a forum dedicated to HR towables. East Coast Pullers.

RE: Financial health of manufacturer

When I purchased my Cedar Creek in '07, I had to ask for the second year warranty. The dealer was ready to finalize everything, without mentioning this to me :h. I had to fill out a form and and send it along with a check directly to Forest River.

Another vote for Ocean Lakes. Camping there the week after Christmas has become a family tradition for us.

RE: Iron Man LT tires on Forest River 5th Wheel

A telling fact is that Hercules has not answered our emails on warranty and coverage for damage to a trailer!!! Chris
There has been no response to my inquiry either.
My experience has been that if you can call a manufacturer and get a real live person on the line, the chances of you obtaining what you need (information, service, etc.) are better than email.
I posted in a previous thread that I called Hercules (talked to Mary Ann) explained my concern (dry rot cracks) and she helped me out right there on the spot.

RE: Fuel Availability Along Interstate 95 In NC, SC, GA, & FL?

I just came back from Charleston and I saw very few pumps bagged off. It appeared to me that diesel fuel was in good supply. I traveled I-95
the majority of the way from Raleigh to Charleston and had no problems getting fuel.

RE: Iron Man LT tires on Forest River 5th Wheel

I'm beginning to sound like my daughter when she was 13 and couldn't decide what shoes to wear. One minute it is get rid of them, the next it is give them a try.
I would want to hear from someone that they will stand behind the warranty including damage to the trailer, before giving them a try.
Consumers need to start demanding quality tires or no sale. If I every buy another trailer, it will have good tires before I back under it.
Chris
I can offer a bit of real world experience with regards to Hercules. The Merit tires on sig 5er began to develop small hairline cracks around the bead of the tire. I contacted Hercules and explained my concern. They offered to reimburse me 50 % of the cost of a new set of tires. I took them up on their offer and now the 5er sports a new set of BFG Commercial TA's.

RE: What kind of Wax do you 5ers use?

I like RejeX. It's very easy to apply and remove, the finish lasts a long time, and it removes black streaks. Also works great on glass. It is a little pricy, however it's worth it imo.

RE: ocean lakes campground myrtle beach

If you stay in HH to be close to the pool, the observation deck may block your view of the beach. That may or may not be important to you.
Crowds, noise, and golf cart traffic will not be issues for you in November. I-8 is an awesome ocean front site. Be sure to get a site with a concrete pad.

RE: Jordan Lake in NC

All 3 cg's are good. Parker's Creek does not have any waterfront sites with utilities due to the low elevation and subject to flooding when the water level rises. Popular Point has the largest number of sites but be mindful of loose 30 amp receptacles on the power pole. There are quite a few out there that need replacing. Crosswinds is my personal choice of the 3 cg's on Jordan Lake. We like the duplex sites. Popular Point and Crosswinds are big rig friendly. Parker's Creek has sites that will accommodate large 5ers, but not as many as the other cg's.

RE: Need New Tires!!!!!

I have the BFG Commercial TA's on my 5er and I also run them on the majority of the fleet vehicles that manage. The service life is better than most and they wear evenly like Michelin's do.

RE: RV sales down..... Local story news

I went to the show in Raleigh yesterday and the turnout was very light. I was walking through the parts and accessory display for one of the local dealers, and the fellow who was managing that area was asleep in a lounge chair :Z. One other noteworthy item was that a dealer who used to used to sell Americamp (dropped them about 2 years ago) told me that it would only be a matter of time before Americamp goes under. I certainly hope that's not the case, however if it is true I wouldn't be surprised.

Don't pull the trigger on this one. If I was going to purchase a 5er like you are considering at this moment, I would look at New Horizons or Excel.

RE: Hello everyone..Looking for new 5ver advice..

brotherb,
Welcome to rv.net. Thank you for doing what you do. Your service to our country is very much appreciated. I don't really have anything to offer as far as your quest for the right 5er. Your diligence with regards to the homework you are doing will pay off in the end. It's important to recognize the folks in the military whenever possible.

RE: clear screen door

I purchased a replacement screen door with the clear view panels directly from Cedar Creek. The cost was around $80.00. The panels have a thin plastic material covering on them that I believe is called Vellum. They are in a removable framework that looks nice. One other benefit is that the you won't have the additional weight of the Lexan that over time may cause the door to drag on the threshold.
I experienced that problem with a SunnyBrook that I had a few years ago.

RE: ocean lakes cancellations

I was camping in Ocean Lakes a few years ago when Hurricane Charlie came through. We packed up and left about 8 hours before the evacuation order was issued. I called OL the next day and explained my situation. They refunded the balance of my stay (2 nights) with no questions asked.
